Remember the boardwalks? Sunsets dripping golden syrup across the horizon? Radiant warmth painting everything in a timeless glow? Hot cement splashed with salt?
Who were you with? Do you still talk?
If you could go anywhere now, to any time, where would you choose? Would there be dancing? Does it feel real?
Recall being in the centre of the crashing wave, the eye of a collapsing pipe, a crushing tube, where for a moment, an endless twisting vortex opens up. Then the wash, tumbling, a cleansing whirlpool took you and pinned you to the ocean floor? Then it passes, and you reach the surface, breathless, gulping mouthfuls of air, bathed in a sea of glistening gold, against a sunset for the ages?
Remember the spray, raining down on the rocks above a coral reef. Drops suspended, time slowing, disappearing into vapour.
The gentle green ponds, swimmers dipping under, cannonballing in, folding into the taut-drum surface and disappearing beneath.
Where did the pink clouds go, unzipping a gelatinous goo across the sun, sea, earth and sky, and colouring a forever afternoon. Have you ever stopped time? Where and why?
When will you go back?
Sunless/Endless is a 52-minute trip back to the best instalment of your all-time favourite season. Some place you reflect on. A highlight reel of carefree afternoons among a symphony of cicadas, ocean views, solo descents and afternoon strolls. The release sees Melbourne artist Ciao Ciao let four loops unwind into a nostalgic seasonal haze.
The artist’s debut release on local label Funeral OST was created over a year, during 2019 and 2020, across periods where time almost slowed to a stop. Where days collapsed together, seasons passed like clouds, escape seemed beyond reach and the simple comforts of the natural world provided the familiarity of a warm welcome from an old friend. It’s a meditative, unfolding display of texture and mood.
Each of the four pieces patiently orbits a core melody, evoking a feeling of warped time, place and season. The crunch, bristle, whistle, crackle and squelch of the natural world coalesce into a nostalgic soup, inviting reflection, flights of fantasy and daydreaming. Frayed edges, sun-kissed ocean chop, the slush of fresh sleet, a coastal downpour, the lightness of a spring breeze, the swaying of long grass and the melody of a whipping wind. Surf’s up.
